Happy New Year!
Starting today, we are challenging all church members to read through the book of Psalms and Proverbs once a month. You will be able to find those daily selections right here at the devotions page of www.calvarynow.com. These two books are filled with great insight into our Heavenly Father and at the same time giving us great wisdom and instruction for life.
In Psalm 1 we read,
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so, but they are like chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
In this great psalm we see two very different choices for life. We see in the first three verses the prosperity that comes to the one who fears the Lord and seeks Him whole heartedly. The imagery here is wonderful. The one who delights in the Lord will...
- Be like a tree that is sturdy and strong and always nourished by water
- Always yield fruit and will not wither
- Always prosper in whatever he does
Not so the one who chooses his own way. Scripture reminds us here that the way of the wicked will perish.
As you enter into this New Year it is a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. As you meditate on this passage this morning, would you be willing to commit yourself to be one who delights in the Lord, one who finds great pleasure in Him?
Lord, today I commit myself to You, to delight in You, to find my joy in You
